Sleuths to X-ray Soyuz Space Capsule at Chabot
Who:
Chabot Space & Science Center
What:
Teams from Alameda company HESCO (John Powis) and Q C Services
in Hayward (Brad Klossner) will attempt to X-ray Chabot’s
Russian Soyuz Capsule, in part to help determine if the craft
has ever flown in space. Members of the media are invited for
safe-access interviews with Chabot staff and team leaders Brad
Klossner and John Powis, who will schedule times during which
they can explain what they are doing and demonstrate how they
go about it. The first films will be developed onsite in their
truck, and arrangements can be made to take a look. In addition,
B-roll will be shot during the procedure.
The Soyuz capsule, about 30 years old, is undergoing an extensive
cleaning and restoration, during which Chabot hopes to find clues
to its history, about which little is known. Prior to dismantling
the capsule for cleaning and to stabilize corrosion, it is being
X-rayed as a means of learning about its structure, its history,
and how it was built. The eventual goal is to match the X-ray
films with 3D laser scans done recently by UC Berkeley students,
as well as a future internal 3D scan, in order to produce a complete
picture of the capsule. These images will later be used in the
new All-Dome screening technology coming soon to Chabot’s
planetarium, and in the eventual large space exhibit that the
Soyuz will be part of.
To Chabot’s knowledge this is the first time that a Soyuz
capsule has been X-Rayed!
Please note:
This process involves an intense X Ray source. Visitors must follow
instructions from the teams at all times.
